Vintage wooden bowl

I found this wooden bowl from my recent Goodwill trip.  It's made of solid black walnut.  Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the removable stick in the middle?  What is the bowl for?   Would super appreciate your  input!

Incredible Goodwill Finds!

Another of my glorious Goodwill grab.  It's so much fun combing the racks with clothes from different era blended together.  I get my adreline rush from thrifting...seriously!  This vintage Du Barry 60's dress still has it's original tag.

Quilted red leather purse.  It was sold before I decided to keep it!!! Anyways, the purse was made my emmetiesse Italy.  Really cute and unique purse!
